In plain words

O my mind, hold the One in your thoughts — the One who ends pain and sorrow, and freely gives the gift of the Name.

Everything there is rests in the One’s house; its storerooms overflow with every treasure.

Its worth is beyond any price — high, beyond reach, endless.

It cherishes every living being, caring for each one, again and again. Meet the true teaching, and melt into the Word.

Everything rests in the One’s house — it cares for each being, without limit.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan tells his mind to keep the One in its thoughts, the One who ends all pain.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Mayray man japee-ai har bhagvantaa: O my mind, remember the One who has everything. Naam daan day-ay jan apnay: the One gives the gift of the Name. Dookh darad kaa hantaa: the One ends pain and sorrow.

Na-o nidh bharay bhandaar: the One's storerooms overflow with na-o nidh, the nine treasures. It's an old way of saying every kind of riches there is. And the One is oochaa agam apaar: high, beyond reach, without end.

Jee-a jant partipaaldaa: the One looks after every living creature, day after day. Think of a mother who feeds, tucks in, and checks on her children every single day, even when no one says thank you.

To come close to this One, meet the True Guru. Sabad milaavanhaar: the Word is what joins us to the One.

A Question to Sit With

Who takes care of you again and again, even when you don’t notice?
