Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 147
Verse 1 of 8

Even in the First Beginning, the Name Was There

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
sorath mehlaa 5.
Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਦੁਖ ਸਾਗਰੋ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਹ ਅਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥
maat garabh dukh saagro pi-aaray tah apnaa naam japaa-i-aa.
The womb of the mother is an ocean of pain, O Beloved; even there, the Lord causes His Name to be chanted.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਸਰੀਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
baahar kaadh bikh pasree-aa pi-aaray maa-i-aa moh vaDhaa-i-aa.
When he emerges, he finds corruption pervading everywhere, O Beloved, and he becomes increasingly attached to Maya.
jis no keeto karam aap pi-aaray tis pooraa guroo milaa-i-aa.
One whom the Lord blesses with His kind favor, O Beloved, meets the Perfect Guru.
ਸੋ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
so aaraaDhay saas saas pi-aaray raam naam liv laa-i-aa. ||1||
He worships the Lord in adoration with each and every breath, O Beloved; he is lovingly attached to the Lord's Name. ||1||

In plain words

Even in the very first hidden beginning of your life, before you knew anything, the Name was already with you, O dear one.

Then we arrive in a busy, dazzling world and get swept up in all its shiny, passing things.

But when grace touches a heart, it meets the true teaching.

And then it treasures the One with every single breath, tied to the Name with love.

Even before you knew anything, the Name was already with you.
The deeper layer

This one says the Name was with you from the very start, even before you knew anything.

The verse goes back to the first hidden beginning of a life, before a baby is even born. Tah apnaa naam japaa-i-aa — even there, the One kept the Name going. The Name, the Naam, is the One's living presence, not just a word.

Then we arrive in a busy, dazzling world. Baahar kaadh bikh pasree-aa — outside, bikh is spread everywhere. Bikh is anything that looks sweet but leaves us worse. Like a game built to keep you tapping, it grabs more and more of our attention.

What turns us back? Jis no keeto karam aap — grace, the One's own kindness. Grace leads a heart to the true Teacher. Then that heart treasures the One saas saas, with every breath.

Listen for pi-aaray, "O dear one," in every line. The whole song is spoken with love.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that has been caring for you since before you can remember?
