In plain words

Holding on to the edge of the One’s robe, we are carried safely across every fear and sorrow.

One glance of grace, and we are blessed — the One stays beside us all the way through.

Mind and body grow cool and calm, fed by the Name.

I have stepped inside the One’s shelter — the One who lifts away all our mistakes.

One glance of grace, and we are carried across every fear.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says that holding on to the One carries us safely across every fear, and ends the shabad in the One's shelter.

Anchal laa-ay taraa-i-aa: by holding the hem of the One's robe, we are carried across. Bha-ojal dukh sansaar: across the world's scary ocean of fear and pain. Think of a small child crossing a busy street, holding tight to a parent's coat.

Kar kirpaa nadar nihaali-aa: in kindness, the One looked at us with nadar, a glance of grace. Grace is a gift we receive, not a prize we earn. And the One stays with us all the way.

Man tan seetal ho-i-aa: mind and body grow cool and calm, like cold water on a hot day. Bhojan naam adhaar: the Name is our food and our support.

Naanak tis sarnaagatee: Guru Arjan, speaking as Nanak, has come into the One's sarnaagatee, shelter. The One is kilbikh kaatanhaar: the One who lifts away all our wrongs and mistakes.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone’s steady presence helped you get through something hard?
