Verse 8 of 9

I Cannot Live an Instant Without You

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
tis bin gharhee na jeevee-ai bhaa-ee sarab kalaa bharpoor.
Without Him, I cannot live, even for an instant, O Siblings of Destiny; He is totally filled with all powers.
ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਭਾਈ ਪੇਖਉ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
saas giraas na visrai bhaa-ee paykha-o sadaa hajoor.
With every breath and morsel of food, I will not forget Him, O Siblings of Destiny; I behold Him ever-present.
ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
saaDhoo sang milaa-i-aa bhaa-ee sarab rahi-aa bharpoor.
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I meet Him, O Siblings of Destiny; He is totally pervading and permeating everywhere.
ਜਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਲਗੀਆ ਭਾਈ ਸੇ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮਰਦੇ ਝੂਰਿ ॥੮॥
jinaa pareet na lagee-aa bhaa-ee say nit nit marday jhoor. ||8||
Those who do not embrace love for the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny, always die crying out in pain. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I couldn’t last a single moment without the One who fills everything with life.

With every breath and every bite, I keep the One in mind, seeing it right here, always near.

In good company I meet it — for it is spread through everything, everywhere.

A heart that never lets love in lives dry and restless.

Kept in mind with every breath, the One is always near.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says he cannot live even a moment without the One, who is always near.

Tis bin gharhee na jeevee-ai: without the One, I can't live even a gharhee, a tiny moment. The One is sarab kalaa bharpoor, full of every power.

Saas giraas na visrai: not with any breath, not with any bite of food, do I forget. That means remembering all the time. Paykha-o sadaa hajoor: I see the One always right here.

Think of the way you breathe. You don't have to schedule it. It just keeps going, all day, with no breaks. Remembering the One can become like breathing.

Saadhoo sang: in the company of good, seeking people, I met the One, who fills everything everywhere.

The last line is strong. People who never let this love in are said to "die crying, day after day." Put gently, a life without love feels dry and restless. The verse points us toward the aliveness that love brings.

A Question to Sit With

What small habit could help you remember something important all day?
