Verse 7 of 9

The One Who Feeds Every Breath

ਬਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬੈ ਭਾਈ ਹਉ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
baho gun mayray saahibai bhaa-ee ha-o tis kai bal jaa-o.
My Lord and Master has so many virtues, O Siblings of Destiny; I am a sacrifice to Him.
ਓਹੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਣੀਆਰੇ ਪਾਲਦਾ ਭਾਈ ਦੇਇ ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਥਾਉ ॥
oh nirgunee-aaray paaldaa bhaa-ee day-ay nithaavay thaa-o.
He nurtures even the most worthless, O Siblings of Destiny, and gives home to the homeless.
ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਭਾਈ ਗੂੜਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
rijak sambaahay saas saas bhaa-ee goorhaa jaa kaa naa-o.
He gives us nourishment with each and every breath, O Siblings of Destiny; His Name is everlasting.
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਪੂਰਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰਮਾਉ ॥੭॥
jis gur saachaa bhaytee-ai bhaa-ee pooraa tis karmaa-o. ||7||
One who meets with the True Guru, O Siblings of Destiny, does so only by perfect destiny. ||7||

In plain words

The One I belong to is full of goodness — my whole self bows in gratitude.

It cares for the ones the world calls nobody, and gives a home to those who have none.

With every breath it feeds us, and its Name goes on forever.

When a heart truly meets the teaching, it is a moment ripe and complete.

The One feeds every breath and homes the ones the world overlooks.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says his Master is full of goodness and cares for those the world overlooks.

Baho gun mayray saahibai: my Master has so many good qualities. Ha-o tis kai bal jaa-o: I give my whole self in thanks.

Oh nirgunee-aaray paaldaa: the One looks after even those who seem to have nothing to offer. Day-ay nithaavay thaa-o: the One gives a home to those with no place to go. This tenderness for the overlooked is the heart of the verse.

Think of the kid who always gets picked last for teams. The One is like a captain who picks that kid first, with a big smile.

Rijak sambaahay saas saas: the One gives us what we need with every breath. The One is the Provider, so we can live without worry. And goorhaa jaa kaa naa-o: the Name lasts forever.

Jis gur saachaa bhaytee-ai: whoever meets the True Guru, pooraa tis karmaa-o: that meeting comes from a full, ripe blessing, like fruit ready at just the right time.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you know that makes sure the overlooked are cared for?
