Contentment and Deep Listening

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਭਾਈ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
gur poorai santokhi-aa bhaa-ee ahinis laagaa bhaa-o.
The Perfect Guru has blessed me with contentment, O Siblings of Destiny; day and night, I remain attached to the Lord's Love.
ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਦੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
rasnaa raam ravai sadaa bhaa-ee saachaa saad su-aa-o.
My tongue continually chants the Lord's Name, O Siblings of Destiny; this is the true taste, and the object of human life.
ਕਰਨੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਭਾਈ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਥਾਉ ॥
karnee sun sun jeevi-aa bhaa-ee nihchal paa-i-aa thaa-o.
Listening with my ears, I hear and so I live, O Siblings of Destiny; I have obtained the unchanging, unmoving state.
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਭਾਈ ਸੋ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੬॥
jis parteet na aavee bhaa-ee so jee-arhaa jal jaa-o. ||6||
That soul, which does not place its faith in the Lord shall burn, O Siblings of Destiny. ||6||

In plain words

The teaching has filled me with contentment; day and night my heart leans toward love.

My tongue keeps saying the Name — this is the truest taste there is, the real point of being alive.

Listening deeply, really listening, I come alive and find a still, unshakable place to stand.

A heart with no trust anywhere aches with a thirst that passing things can never quench.

Deep listening brings a still place that nothing can shake.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says the Guru has made him content, and deep listening gives him a place to stand that nothing can shake.

Gur poorai santokhi-aa: the perfect Guru filled me with santokh, contentment, the feeling of "I have enough." Ahinis laagaa bhaa-o: day and night, I stay close to love.

Rasnaa raam ravai sadaa: my tongue keeps saying the Name. Saachaa saad su-aa-o: this is the true taste, and the real point of life.

Karnee sun sun jeevi-aa: by listening, listening with my ears, I truly live. This is suniai, deep listening. Nihchal paa-i-aa thaa-o: I found a place that doesn't wobble. Think of a tree whose roots hold tight in a storm.

The last line is stern. A soul with no parteet, no trust in the One, is said to burn. It burns like a thirst that nothing passing can quench. The point is the other side of it: trust brings cool, steady peace.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to really listen, instead of waiting to talk?
