Verse 5 of 9

The Name in the Heart, and the World Blooms

paraym padaarath naam hai bhaa-ee maa-i-aa moh binaas.
The Love of the Name is the greatest treasure, O Siblings of Destiny; through it, emotional attachment to Maya is dispelled.
tis bhaavai taa mayl la-ay bhaa-ee hirdai naam nivaas.
If it is pleasing to His Will, then He unites us in His Union, O Siblings of Destiny; the Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to abide in the mind.
gurmukh kamal pargaasee-ai bhaa-ee ridai hovai pargaas.
The heart-lotus of the Gurmukh blossoms forth, O Siblings of Destiny, and the heart is illumined.
pargat bha-i-aa partaap parabh bhaa-ee ma-oli-aa Dharat akaas. ||5||
The Glory of God has been revealed, O Siblings of Destiny, and the earth and sky have blossomed forth. ||5||

In plain words

The love of the Name is the richest treasure there is; next to it, the pull of passing things loosens its grip.

When the moment is right, the One draws us close, and the Name comes to live in the heart.

The heart opens like a lotus and fills with light.

The One’s splendor shines out — and the whole earth and sky seem to blossom.

When the Name lives in the heart, the whole world seems to bloom.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says that when the Name lives in the heart, the whole world seems to bloom.

Praym padaarath naam hai: the Name is the treasure of love. Through it, maa-i-aa moh binaas: our tight grip on maya, the shiny things that don't last, comes loose.

Tis bhaavai taa mayl la-ay: when the One wishes, It draws us close, and the Name comes to live in the heart.

Gurmukh kamal pargaasee-ai: for the gurmukh, the person turned toward the Guru, the lotus of the heart blooms. Ridai hovai pargaas: the heart fills with light.

Then the joy spills outward. Ma-oli-aa dharat akaas: the earth and sky burst into bloom.

Think of a day when you are really happy, maybe your birthday. The sun looks brighter, food tastes better, and even strangers seem friendly. A full heart colors the whole world.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel full of love, how does the world around you look?
