Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 146
Verse 4 of 9

Drop Mine and Yours, Become the Dust

ਮੇਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਹੋਈਐ ਸਭ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ॥
mayraa tayraa chhodee-ai bhaa-ee ho-ee-ai sabh kee Dhoor.
Give up your sense of mine and yours, O Siblings of Destiny, and become the dust of the feet of all.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਸਾਰਿਆ ਭਾਈ ਪੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੈ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
ghat ghat barahm pasaari-aa bhaa-ee paykhai sunai hajoor.
In each and every heart, God is contained, O Siblings of Destiny; He sees, and hears, and is ever-present with us.
jit din visrai paarbarahm bhaa-ee tit din maree-ai jhoor.
On that day when one forgets the Supreme Lord God, O Siblings of Destiny, on that day, one ought to die crying out in pain.
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਸਮਰਥੋ ਭਾਈ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥੪॥
karan karaavan samratho bhaa-ee sarab kalaa bharpoor. ||4||
He is the all-powerful Cause of Causes, O Siblings of Destiny; he is totally filled with all powers. ||4||

In plain words

Let go of “mine” and “yours”; be humble enough to serve everyone, like the gentle dust beneath their feet.

The One lives in every single heart — seeing, hearing, right here with us always.

A day spent forgetting that nearness feels hollow and gray.

The One holds all power, the cause behind every cause, full and complete.

Drop “mine” and “yours” — the One is already in every heart.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says to let go of "mine" and "yours," because the One lives in every heart.

Mayraa tayraa chhodee-ai: drop "mine and yours." That split is the root of haumai, the loud "me first." Ho-ee-ai sabh kee dhoor: become the dust under everyone's feet. It is a picture of deep humility: being ready to serve anyone.

Think of two kids fighting over whose turn it is on the swing. Once they start pushing each other instead, the fighting stops and both have fun.

Ghat ghat barahm pasaari-aa: the One is spread through every single heart. The One sees, hears, and is hajoor, right here with us.

The third line speaks very strongly. Jit din visrai paarbarahm: the day we forget the One is a day of deep sadness, a day that goes empty and gray. The point is how much we lose when we forget Who is close.

Karan karaavan samratho: the One is the all-powerful Cause of everything, full of every power.

A Question to Sit With

What changes when you treat everyone as worth serving?
