Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 147
Verse 4 of 8

A Heart Too Full of Wanting

maa-i-aa laalach ati-aa pi-aaray chit na aavahi mool.
He is filled with longing for Maya, O Beloved, and so the Lord does not ever come into his mind.
jin too visrahi paarbarahm su-aamee say tan ho-ay Dhoorh.
Those who forget You, O Supreme Lord Master, their bodies turn to dust.
billaat karahi bahutayri-aa pi-aaray utrai naahee sool.
They cry out and scream horribly, O Beloved, but their torment does not end.
jo gur mayl savaari-aa pi-aaray tin kaa rahi-aa mool. ||4||
Those who meet the Guru, and reform themselves, O Beloved, their capital remains intact. ||4||

In plain words

When a heart is packed full of wanting more and more, there’s no room left to remember the One.

Cut off from the Source, everything it gathered slips away like sand.

No matter how much it grasps, a restless emptiness stays.

But a heart that meets the teaching is made whole — its real treasure stays safe.

A heart stuffed with wanting has no room to remember the One.
The deeper layer

This one says a heart stuffed with wanting has no room left for the One.

Maa-i-aa laalach ati-aa — too full of craving for Maya. Maya means the shiny, passing things of the world: stuff, money, more and more. Think of a backpack crammed so full the zipper won't close. There is no space for what really matters.

The verse uses strong words for where this goes. A life spent only grabbing crumbles, like sand slipping through your fingers. However much it grasps, the restless ache stays.

But the end brings good news. Tin kaa rahi-aa mool — for those who meet the Teacher, the mool stays safe. Mool means the capital, your real savings. What truly matters is never lost.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed that getting more stuff doesn’t always fill you up?
