Verse 8 of 8

The Compassionate One, a Sure Shelter

samrath purakh da-i-aal day-o pi-aaray bhagtaa tis kaa taan.
The all-powerful Divine Lord is compassionate, O Beloved; He is the Support of His devotees.
tis sarnaa-ee dheh pa-ay pi-aaray je antarjaamee jaan.
I seek His Sanctuary, O Beloved; He is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
halat palat savaari-aa pi-aaray mastak sach neesaan.
He has adorned me in this world and the next, O Beloved; He has placed the Emblem of Truth upon my forehead.
so parabh kaday na veesrai pi-aaray naanak sad kurbaan. ||8||2||
I shall never forget that God, O Beloved; Nanak is forever a sacrifice to Him. ||8||2||

In plain words

The One who holds all power is gentle and kind, the sure support of every loving heart.

Fall into that shelter — the One knows all that stirs inside you.

It makes things beautiful here and everywhere, marking the heart with the sign of what is real.

May I never let that One slip from mind; my whole self bows in love.

The all-powerful One is gentle — a sure shelter for every loving heart.
The deeper layer

This one says the One who holds all power is also gentle, and is a sure place to rest.

Samrath purakh da-i-aal — all-powerful, and kind too. Strong and gentle together, like a big sister who could lift anything but uses her strength to carry you. Bhagtaa tis kaa taan: the One is the strength of everyone who loves Him.

Halat palat savaari-aa — life is made beautiful here and in what comes after. Mastak sach neesaan — the mark of truth on the forehead. It is the sign of what is real, worn openly.

The hymn ends with Guru Arjan, signing as Nanak, giving his whole self: naanak sad kurbaan. It means, "Nanak gives himself forever, with love."

A Question to Sit With
