Verse 8 of 9

Singing Together, the Highest Deed of All

ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਰਮਾ ॥
har keerat saaDhsangat hai sir karman kai karmaa.
Singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is the highest of all actions.
kaho naanak tis bha-i-o paraapat jis purab likhay kaa lahnaa. ||8||
Says Nanak, he alone obtains it, who is pre-destined to receive it. ||8||

In plain words

Of all the things a person can do, this is the highest: to sing the One’s praises together, in good company.

And that gift comes to the heart that is ready to receive it.

Above every other effort: sing the One’s praises together.
The deeper layer

After listing everything that does not work, the shabad finally says what does: singing the One's praises together.

Har keerat is singing the One's praises. SaaDhsangat means the company of good and holy people. Together they are sir karman kai karmaa, the deed above all deeds. Think of a choir. One voice is lovely, but many voices together can fill a whole room and lift everyone in it.

Jis purab likhay kaa lahnaa means it comes to the one for whom it was written. The best way to hear it is this: the gift comes to the heart that is ready to receive it. Grace is given, not earned.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something that feels better to do together than alone?
