You yourself are the Maker who shaped the whole world.
You set the great game in motion, and you are the one who arranges every move of it.
You are the Giver of every gift, and you are also the one who enjoys it — both at once.
Your Word runs through everything that exists, holding it all together.
So I keep turning toward the teaching and singing your praise, grateful for the One who showed me the way.
The first Pauri of the Vaar (Guru Ram Das) is pure wonder at the Oneness. too aapay sisat kartaa — You yourself are the Creator; tuDh aapay khayl rachaa-ay — You yourself staged the play; daataa... aap bhoganhaari-aa — You are both Giver and Enjoyer. This is the Vaar's foundation stone: not a distant ruler above creation, but the single reality expressing itself as the creation, the Giver and the receiver being one. sabh tayraa sabad vartai — the divine Word (Shabad) pervades all. The Pauri, as usual in a Vaar, is the soaring, celebratory step, and here it sets the whole song's theme: everything is the One at play.
Have you ever noticed the same thing being both the giver and the receiver at once?
