The heart that is all wrapped up in ego runs hot and restless, wandering after this and that, never settling.
But the true teaching reaches in and holds it safe, claiming it as its own.
Once you see clearly, you notice how feverish the whole world can be — always burning after something.
And those who let the Word soak into them grow cool and calm and steady. They live from what is real.
Guru Amar Das opens with the Vaar's key medical image: ego as fever. ha-umai jaltay — those aflame with 'I, me, mine' are restless and wandering; ih jag jaltaa — seen clearly, the whole world runs hot with craving. The remedy is not punishment but cooling: sabad ratay say seetal bha-ay — those imbued with the Word become cool and soothed. Note the frame the guidelines ask for — ego is a disease to be healed, not a crime to be condemned. The 'burning' here is the burning of restlessness, and the cure is simple: let something real soak in until the fever breaks.
What helps you cool down and feel steady when your mind is running hot?
