Until the Heart Sees, How Can It Praise

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥
salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
antar gi-aan na aa-i-o jit kichh sojhee paa-ay.
Spiritual wisdom, which would bring understanding, does not enter into his mind.
ਵਿਣੁ ਡਿਠਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
vin dithaa ki-aa salaahee-ai anDhaa anDh kamaa-ay.
Without seeing, how can he praise the Lord? The blind act in blindness.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
naanak sabad pachhaanee-ai naam vasai man aa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, when one realizes the Word of the Shabad, then the Naam comes to abide in the mind. ||1||

In plain words

If understanding hasn't yet dawned in you, it is hard to make sense of things clearly.

How can you praise something you have never seen? You are working a bit in the dark.

Nanak says: recognize the Word, and the Naam comes to live in your heart.

Real understanding comes from seeing for yourself, not from repeating what you have not yet met.
The deeper layer

Praise comes alive once the heart has seen for itself.

A short shalok of Guru Amar Das on the difference between second-hand words and first-hand seeing. vin dithaa ki-aa salaahee-ai — how can you praise what you have never seen? anDhaa, 'blind', here means not-yet-seeing — a stage everyone passes through. The resolution is warm: sabad pachhaaneeai naam vasai man aa-ay — when the Word is recognized, the Name settles in the heart and understanding arrives from the inside. The teaching honors direct experience over borrowed opinions — a good thing for a child to hear.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you only understood once you experienced it yourself?
