Verse 53 of 87

When the Light Merges Into the Light

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
mahal kumhal na jaannee moorakh apnai su-aa-ay.
The fools do not know the difference between good and bad; they are deceived by their self-interests.
sabad cheeneh taa mahal laheh jotee jot samaa-ay.
But if they contemplate the Word of the Shabad, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and their light merges in the Light.
sadaa sachay kaa bha-o man vasai taa sabhaa sojhee paa-ay.
The Fear of God is always on their minds, and so they come to understand everything.
satgur apnai ghar varatdaa aapay la-ay milaa-ay.
The True Guru is pervading the homes within; He Himself blends them with the Lord.
naanak satgur mili-ai sabh pooree pa-ee jis no kirpaa karay rajaa-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, they meet the True Guru, and all their desires are fulfilled, if the Lord grants His Grace and so wills. ||2||

In plain words

It is easy to lose track of what is good for us and what only looks good — our own wants can fool us.

But sit with the true Word and reflect on it, and you find your way to the deepest home there is — and your small inner light slips into the great Light, like a candle flame lost in sunrise.

When a gentle awe of the One lives steadily in your heart, understanding of everything begins to open.

The Guru is already at work inside you, right there in the home of your own heart, quietly drawing you close.

Nanak says: when you meet the Guru, everything you longed for is fulfilled — as grace wills.

Your own small light was never separate from the great Light — sitting quietly with what is true lets you feel that.
The deeper layer

Jotee jot samaa-ay — “light merging into Light” — is the small flame finding it was never apart from its source, like a candle flame lost in sunrise. This is Ik Onkar as a felt experience: a reunion. Moorakh apnai su-aa-ay names how our own wants can fool anyone. Bha-o is awe, a deep reverence. And satgur apnai ghar vartadaa — the Guru is at work in the home within, close by, already inside you.

A Question to Sit With

When have you had trouble telling what was good for you from what just looked good? How could you tell the difference?
