Even in a Dark Age, the Song Is Right Here

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
chahu jugee kal kaalee kaaNdhee ik utam padvee is jug maahi.
Kali Yuga is called the Dark Age, but the most sublime state is attained in this age.
gurmukh har keerat fal paa-ee-ai jin ka-o har likh paahi.
The Gurmukh obtains the fruit, the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises; this is his destiny, ordained by the Lord.
naanak gur parsaadee an-din bhagat har uchrahi har bhagtee maahi samaahi. ||2||
O Nanak, by Guru's Grace, he worships the Lord night and day; he chants the Lord's Name, and remains absorbed in the Lord's devotional worship. ||2||

In plain words

People sometimes say the times we live in are hard and dark. But even now — especially now — the very highest, brightest thing is within reach.

The one who turns toward the Guru gets to taste the sweetest fruit of all: singing the praises of the One. This is the inheritance written for them.

Nanak says: by the Guru's grace, such a person delights in the One night and day, keeps the Name on their lips, and sinks happily into that love.

You don't have to wait for a better time — the best thing is available right now, wherever you are.
The deeper layer

Kali Yuga (the "dark age") is named — and then answered at once: ik utam padvee is jug maahi, the most sublime state is open in this very age. The gloomy label becomes an opening: the song is here right now, for anyone. The "fruit" (fal) of a whole life is simply keerat — praise, remembrance. It is one of the Vaar's most hopeful notes: no golden age is required; the door is open in the age you live in.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever heard someone say things are worse now than they used to be? What good and beautiful things can you still find right here, today?
