The Toothless Hunger That Eats the World

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
maa-i-aa mamtaa mohnee jin vin dantaa jag khaa-i-aa.
The love of Maya is enticing; without teeth, it has eaten up the world.
manmukh khaaDhay gurmukh ubray jinee sach naam chit laa-i-aa.
The self-willed manmukhs are eaten away, while the Gurmukhs are saved; they focus their consciousness on the True Name.
bin naavai jag kamlaa firai gurmukh nadree aa-i-aa.
Without the Name, the world wanders around insane; the Gurmukhs come to see this.
DhanDhaa karti-aa nihfal janam gavaa-i-aa sukh-daata man na vasaa-i-aa.
Involved in worldly affairs, he wastes his life in vain; the peace-giving Lord does not come to abide in his mind.
naanak naam tinaa ka-o mili-aa jin ka-o Dhur likh paa-i-aa. ||1||
O Nanak, they alone obtain the Name, who have such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||

In plain words

The pull of always wanting more is a strange kind of hunger — it has no teeth, yet it swallows people whole.

Those who let it run them get quietly eaten up, while those who keep the True Name in mind stay whole and free.

Without something real at the center, the world spins around a little lost — and once your eyes open, you can see it.

Rushing from task to task can use up a whole life without ever letting the peace-giving One settle in your heart.

Endless wanting can swallow a life; something real at the center keeps you whole.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das gives Maya (the enticing surface-world) a memorable image: jin vin dantaa jag khaa-i-aa — a hunger with no teeth that still devours the world. It is not evil out there; it is the endless wanting that runs us if nothing real sits at the center. bin naavai jag kamlaa firai — without the Name the world wanders a little crazed, busy but unmoored. The gurmukh simply sees this clearly and so is not swallowed by it. The teaching for a child is gentle and practical: being endlessly busy is not the same as being at peace.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing that keeps you steady when everyone around you seems to want more, more, more?
