Wake, My Soul, and Take the Beloved

ਚੇਰੀ ਤੂ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਸਿ ਭਤਾਰਾ ॥
chayree too raam na karas bhataaraa.
O soul-bride slave, why don't you take the Lord as your Husband?
ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jagjeevan paraan aDhaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is the Life of the world, the Support of the breath of life. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Dear soul, why not make the One your true companion, your very heart's beloved?

This is the Life of the whole world, the very support of every breath you take.

The truest companion your soul can choose is the One who is the life of everything.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaao. chayree (the soul, imaged as a bride) is called to take raam as bhataaraa (her beloved). The source's servant-and-master framing is rendered as the soul awakening to its truest companionship. jagjeevan paraan aDhaaraa (Life of the world, support of the breath) names the intimacy of the One who sustains us moment to moment.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to think of the One not as far away, but as your closest companion?
