Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 154
Verse 4 of 5

The One Is the Cause of All Causes

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰੀ ॥
parabh karan karaavanhaaree.
The Lord God is the Cause of causes.
ਕਿਆ ਚੇਰੀ ਹਾਥ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥
ki-aa chayree haath bichaaree.
What is in the hands of the poor soul-bride, the slave?
ਸੋਈ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਗੀ ॥
so-ee so-ee jaagee.
She awakens from her slumber,
ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਈ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੩॥
jit laa-ee tit laagee. ||3||
and she becomes attached to whatever the Lord attaches her. ||3||

In plain words

The One is behind everything that happens, the source from which all doing flows.

On our own, we hold so little in our hands. But when the soul wakes up, it turns naturally toward whatever the One draws it toward, the way a plant leans toward the light.

Our own hands hold little; the awakening itself is a gift we lean into.
The deeper layer

prabh karan karaavanhaaree (the One, cause of all causes) reframes the whole shabad: the soul's awakening is itself grace. jit laa-ee tit laagee (attached to whatever the One attaches her to) is not fatalism but trust, alignment with the flow of existence.

A Question to Sit With

Is there comfort in the idea that you do not have to force everything by yourself?
