Gently, Mind, Turn Toward the Name

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਸਿ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥

The fool does not chant the Name of the Lord.

ki-aa socheh baaraN baaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
So what does he think of, over and over again? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes the mind forgets to hold the One close, and just circles the same worries again and again.

So, gently, dear mind, why keep turning the same thoughts over and over? Turn instead toward the Name, and rest.

Instead of circling the same worries, gently turn the mind toward the One.
The deeper layer

This one says: instead of circling the same worries, gently turn your mind toward the Name.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. The verse calls the forgetful mind gavaaraa, a fool. Read it as Kabir speaking to his own mind, the way you might say "come on, silly" to yourself. It is gentle, not an insult.

Ki-aa socheh baara baaraa: "what are you thinking about, over and over?" It is the loop of worry, like a song stuck in your head. Remembering the One is what quiets that loop.

A Question to Sit With

What is a worried thought you sometimes replay, and what could you turn toward instead?
