You are the Giver of virtue, realized through the Word of Your Shabad. Uttering Your Glories, we merge with You, O Glorious Lord. ||1||

In plain words

The ones who face the teaching live in loving devotion and become dear to the One, keeping the Name close night and day.

You Yourself watch over Your people and keep safe the ones who are dear to Your heart.

You are the giver of every good quality, known through the deep song; naming Your goodness, we melt into Your goodness.

The One watches over and keeps safe the people who are dear to its heart.
The deeper layer

The opening is warm and protective. Gurmukh bhagat karahi prabh bhaaveh — "those facing the teaching love, and become dear to the One." The tender promise: bhagtaa kee saar karahi aap raakhahi — "You Yourself take care of and protect Your people." The One is gundaataa — the giver of virtue: you don't manufacture goodness by willpower; it is a gift received, and gun kahi gunee samaanay, naming the One's goodness you dissolve into goodness. A gentle setup for a shabad about being protected.

A Question to Sit With

When do you most feel watched-over and kept safe?
