One Water in Every Pitcher

ਜਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਕੁੰਭ ਸਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
jal bheetar kumbh samaani-aa.
The water is contained within the pitcher;
ਸਭ ਰਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
sabh raam ayk kar jaani-aa.
I know that the One Lord is contained in all.
ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
gur chaylay hai man maani-aa.
The mind of the disciple has faith in the Guru.
ਜਨ ਨਾਮੈ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥੩॥੩॥
jan naamai tat pachhaani-aa. ||3||3||
Servant Naam Dayv understands the essence of reality. ||3||3||

In plain words

Just as the same water fills every clay pitcher, the One fills every living being.

I have come to know that a single Oneness is present in all. My mind trusts my Teacher completely, and Namdev has recognized the very heart of what is real.

The same Oneness fills every person, like one water in many cups.
The deeper layer

The same One lives in every being, like the same water in every pitcher.

Jal bheetar kumbh samaani-aa — water fills the kumbh, the clay pitcher. Sabh raam ayk kar jaani-aa — I know the One Lord is in all. Picture a row of different jugs and bottles by the kitchen sink, all filled from the same tap. The shapes are different. The water is the same. That is Namdev's picture of Ik Onkar, One Creator in all.

So there is no wall to break down. There is only something true to wake up to. Gur chaylay hai man maani-aa — the student's mind trusts the Guru. Jan naamai tat pachhaani-aa — Namdev, the servant, has recognized tat, the heart of what is real.

A Question to Sit With

If the same life is in everyone, how might that change the way you treat people?
