Verse 3 of 4

Touched by the Stone, Turned to Gold

ਮਿਲਿ ਪਾਰਸ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਇਆ ॥
mil paaras kanchan ho-i-aa.
Touching the philosopher's stone, I have been transformed into gold.
ਮੁਖ ਮਨਸਾ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਰੋਇਆ ॥
mukh mansaa ratan paro-i-aa.
I have threaded the jewels into my mouth and mind.
ਨਿਜ ਭਾਉ ਭਇਆ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਾਗਾ ॥
nij bhaa-o bha-i-aa bharam bhaagaa.
I love Him as my own, and my doubt has been dispelled.
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛੇ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਗਾ ॥੨॥
gur poochhay man patee-aagaa. ||2||
Seeking the Guru's guidance, my mind is content. ||2||

In plain words

Like plain metal touched by the magic stone that turns it to gold, I have been changed through and through.

Now jewels of true words rest on my tongue and in my mind. I love the One as my very own, my confusion has melted, and asking my Teacher, my heart has finally settled into peace.

Love has the power to change you all the way through.
The deeper layer

Meeting the One changes a person the way a magic stone turns plain metal into gold.

Mil paaras kanchan ho-i-aa — touching the paaras, I became gold. The paaras is a stone from old stories that turns iron into gold at a touch. Gurbani, the Gurus' words, loves this picture for how the One changes a person.

Mukh mansaa ratan paro-i-aa — jewels are threaded onto my tongue and my mind. These jewels are true, good words. Nij bhaa-o bha-i-aa bharam bhaagaa — I love the One as my very own, and bharam, doubt, runs away.

Gur poochhay man patee-aagaa — asking the Guru, my mind is content. Think of a hard homework problem that has you worried. You ask a teacher you trust, and in one minute the knot in your stomach is gone. The mind comes to rest, calm and unafraid.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that changed you into a better version of yourself?
