Move With Life, Not Against It, and Grow Closer Than Family
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The one who moves with the flow of the teaching is my true friend, my family, my brother — closer than blood.
When I insist on only my own way, I slowly drift apart and feel the ache of being cut off.
Away from the teacher's wisdom, peace keeps slipping through my fingers, and I keep wishing I had listened.
This one says that whoever walks the Teacher's way becomes your true family.
All through these verses, Guru Amar Das calls us bhaa-ee, "brother, sibling." He talks to us like family. So sikh sakhaa banDhap hai bhaa-ee — the one who walks in the Guru's bhaanaa is a true Sikh (a learner), a friend and a relative. Bhaanaa means the flow of the One's will, the way of the teaching.
The other path is aapnai bhaanai, going only your own way. The verse says that person drifts apart and takes hard knocks. Think of a rower who paddles against the whole team. The boat spins, and everyone gets splashed. That ache isn't a punishment handed down. It's what naturally happens when you cut yourself off.
Without the true Teacher, peace keeps slipping away, and the heart keeps wishing it had listened.
Who feels like family to you not because of blood, but because of how you walk through life together?
