Chanting the Name, Untouched by Fear

ਰਵਿਦਾਸੁ ਜਪੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
ravidaas japai raam naamaa.
Ravi Daas chants the Lord's Name;
ਮੋਹਿ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੩॥੭॥
mohi jam si-o naahee kaamaa. ||3||7||
he is not concerned with the Messenger of Death. ||3||7||

In plain words

Ravidas keeps the Name of the Beloved alive on his lips and in his heart.

And so he walks through life with nothing to fear, not even death.

Holding the Name in your heart leaves no room for fear.
The deeper layer

This one ends the shabad with calm: whoever holds the Name has nothing to fear.

Ravidaas japai raam naamaa — Ravidas keeps repeating the Name of the One. Mohi jam si-o naahee kaamaa — I have no business with jam. In old stories, jam is the messenger who comes at death.

Ravidas doesn't linger on that figure. He just says it has nothing to do with him. Think of a night-light in a dark room. The shadows are still there, but they don't scare you anymore. Holding the Name, Ravidas simply has nothing left to dread.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel calm and unafraid when something worries you?
