Sheltered in the One, Craving and Anger Loosen on Their Own
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Stay always in the shelter of the One — held, protected, and dressed in the quiet glory of the Name.
Through the true teaching I come to understand myself, and the Life of the whole world settles into my heart.
Then craving, anger, and pride loosen on their own. The endless One is here in every place, and the Name lives in my heart.
Age after age, the Word makes the One known, and the Name grows sweet — a friend I love to keep close.
This one says: stay in the One's shelter, and craving and anger loosen on their own.
The Rahao, the "pause" line, is the center of the shabad. Bhaa-ee ray sadaa rahhu sarnaa-ee — dear friends, stay always in the One's shelter. Sarnaa-ee means sanctuary, a safe place. This is Raag Sorath's calm, settling feel turned into a daily practice. The One looks on us with kindness, keeps our honor safe and gives the gift of the Name.
Then the verse calls the One jagjeevan, the Life of the world. The One lives inside all things and comes to stay in the heart. When that happens, a person lets go of craving, anger and pride. This is not a battle. It is a loosening. Think of a clenched fist that relaxes once you feel safe. Once the heart feels safe, these grips ease by themselves. And the Name grows sweet, like a favorite song you never tire of.
When you feel safe and held, what worries quietly let go of you?
