Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 18
Verse 3 of 4

When the Heart Opens Like a Flower, an Unplayed Music Sounds

satgur sayv jin naam pachhaataa safal janam jag aa-i-aa.
Serving the Guru, one realizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord; fruitful is his life, and his coming into the world.
har ras chaakh sadaa man taripti-aa gun gaavai gunee aghaa-i-aa.
Tasting the sublime elixir of the Lord, his mind is satisfied and satiated forever; singing the Glories of the Glorious Lord, he is fulfilled and satisfied.
kamal pargaas sadaa rang raataa anhad sabad vajaa-i-aa.
The lotus of his heart blossoms forth, he is ever imbued with the Lord's Love, and the unstruck melody of the Shabad resounds within him.
tan man nirmal nirmal banee sachay sach samaa-i-aa. ||3||
His body and mind become immaculately pure; his speech becomes immaculate as well, and he merges in the Truest of the True. ||3||

In plain words

When I taste the sweetness of the One, my whole life feels worth it.

The heart opens like a flower, and a silent music I never had to play begins to sound inside me.

Body, mind, and words all grow clear and clean, and I settle into what is most real.

When the heart opens like a flower, a music you never had to play begins to sound inside.
The deeper layer

This one says: when the heart opens like a flower, a music you never played begins to sound. Serving the Guru and coming to know the Name, a life becomes worth living. Tasting har ras, the sweetness of the One, the mind is full and content.

Kamal pargaas — the lotus of the heart opens. This is vigaas, the heart's inner blossoming. Think of a flower opening in the morning sun. Then comes anhad sabad, the "unstruck" music. It is music that plays by itself inside you, with no instrument and no one plucking a string.

Now notice how the clearness spreads outward. Tan man nirmal nirmal banee — body and mind grow clean and clear, and then the words you speak do too. At last the person merges into sach, Truth, the most real thing there is.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel clear and clean all the way through — in body, mind, and words?
