Serve and Listen, and a Natural Music Rises Within

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
sorath mehlaa 3.
Sorat'h, Third Mehl:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਗਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
satgur sayvay taa sahj Dhun upjai gat mat tad hee paa-ay.
Serving the True Guru, the divine melody wells up within, and one is blessed with wisdom and salvation.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੧॥
har kaa naam sachaa man vasi-aa naamay naam samaa-ay. ||1||
The True Name of the Lord comes to abide in the mind, and through the Name, one merges in the Name. ||1||

In plain words

When I serve and listen to the teaching, a natural music rises up inside me all on its own.

The true Name settles into my mind — and through the Name I dissolve right back into the One.

Serve and listen, and a natural music rises inside you all on its own.
The deeper layer

Sahj dhun is the “melody of sahaj” — the music of natural ease, welling up by itself once the fighting stops (a cousin of the anhad, the unstruck sound). And naamay naam samaaay — “through the Name, one merges in the Name” — is a quietly perfect line: the path and the destination turn out to be the same thing.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel a quiet music or rhythm inside you, without trying?
