Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 4
Verse 3 of 4

Dwell in What Is Real and Slowly Become Real Too

ਤੁਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਰਾਚੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਸਾਚੇ ॥
tum saachay ham tum hee raachay sabad bhayd fun saachay.
You are True, and I am absorbed into You; through the mystery of the Shabad, I shall ultimately become True as well.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਸੂਚੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੇ ਸੇ ਕਾਚੇ ॥੩॥
ahinis naam ratay say soochay mar janmay say kaachay. ||3||
Those who are imbued with the Naam day and night are pure, while those who die to be reborn are impure. ||3||

In plain words

You are the real, the lasting thing, and I am absorbed into You. Through the mystery of the deep song, I slowly become real too.

Those whose hearts hold the Name, day and night, become clear and true. And the ones who keep chasing what fades stay a bit unfinished — like clay that hasn't set.

Dwell in what is real, and you slowly become real too — like soft clay firming into its true shape.
The deeper layer

This one says: stay near what is real, and you slowly become real too.

Tum saachay ham tum hee raachay — You are true, and I'm soaked in You. Sabad bhayd fun saachay — through the mystery of the Shabad, the Guru's living Word, I will become true as well. The Sikh word for real and lasting is sach. We grow true by staying close to the True One. It's like a tea bag in warm water. Slowly, the water takes on the tea.

Then comes a contrast: soochay and kaachay. Those who hold the Name day and night are soochay, clean and clear. Those who keep chasing what fades stay kaachay, unfinished, like clay pots not yet baked. The verse says they keep going round, dying and being born again.

The point is growth, not blame. A life that holds the Name firms up, like clay in the kiln. Everyone is still being shaped.

A Question to Sit With

What is something in your life that feels lasting and real, versus something that fades quickly?
