Chasing Highs and Dreading Lows Keeps Us Swinging

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
sorath mehlaa 5.
Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੀ ਕਬ ਊਚੇ ਕਬ ਨੀਚੇ ॥
sagal samagree mohi vi-aapee kab oochay kab neechay.
The whole creation is engrossed in emotional attachment; sometimes, one is high, and at other times, low.
No one can be purified by any rituals or devices; they cannot reach their goal. ||1||

In plain words

The whole world gets caught up in attachment — one day riding high, the next feeling low.

No trick or ritual can clean the heart on its own; by effort alone we never quite arrive.

Chasing highs and dreading lows keeps us swinging; peace doesn't come from tricks or effort alone.
The deeper layer

This one says: chasing highs and dreading lows keeps us swinging.

Sagal samagree mohi vi-aapee: the whole world is swept up in moh. Moh means attachment, holding on too tight to people and things. That holding on makes life swing: kab oochay kab neechay, sometimes high, sometimes low. One day you win the game and feel on top of the world. The next day you lose, and everything feels awful.

The second line gently says that no jatnaa, no trick or ritual, can clean the heart by itself. This is not a jab at any tradition. It is about mistaking hard work for arriving. An earlier shabad in Raag Sorath teaches the same lesson.

A Question to Sit With

Do you notice yourself riding high when things go well and crashing when they don't?
