Real Wisdom Is Never Letting Go of What Matters

ਸੋਈ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਈ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥
so-ee gi-aanee so-ee Dhi-aanee so-ee purakh subhaa-ee.
He alone is spiritually enlightened, he alone is a meditator, and he alone is a man of good nature.
kaho naanak jis bha-ay da-i-aalaa taa ka-o man tay bisar na jaa-ee. ||4||8||
Says Nanak, one unto whom the Lord becomes Merciful, does not forget the Lord from his mind. ||4||8||

In plain words

That one is truly wise. That one truly meditates, and is truly good-natured.

It is the one to whom grace has turned, who never lets the One slip from their mind.

Real wisdom isn't a title you earn; it's simply never letting go of what matters most.
The deeper layer

The truly wise person is simply the one who never lets the One slip from mind.

Here Guru Arjan gives new meaning to three proud titles. So-ee gi-aanee — that one is wise. So-ee Dhi-aanee — that one truly meditates, keeping attention on the One. So-ee purakh subhaa-ee — that one has a good nature.

Who is it? Not the person with the most prizes or the most learning. It is jis bha-ay da-i-aalaa, the one grace has reached. Their mark is simple: taa ka-o man tay bisar na jaa-ee — the One never slips from their mind. Think of a best friend who always remembers your birthday without a reminder. They just keep you close. That steady remembering, called simran, is what real wisdom looks like.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you never want to forget, no matter how busy life gets?
