Verse 4 of 4

Countless Ordinary People Found Their Way, and So Can You

ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਕੀ ਕੇਤਕ ਬਾਤ ਹੈ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਰਾਧੀ ਤਰਿਆ ਰੇ ॥
mai moorakh kee kaytak baat hai kot paraaDhee tari-aa ray.
I am just a fool, but millions of sinners just like me have been saved.
gur naanak jin suni-aa paykhi-aa say fir garbhaas na pari-aa ray. ||4||2||13||
Those who have heard, and seen Guru Nanak, do not descend into the womb of reincarnation again. ||4||2||13||

In plain words

My small understanding is nothing to speak of. Yet so many ordinary people have already crossed over.

Those who truly hear and see the teaching don't fall back into forgetting and separation.

Countless ordinary people have found their way through — which means you can too.
The deeper layer

If so many ordinary, stumbling people found their way, you can too.

Mai moorakh kee kaytak baat hai — what is one foolish person like me? Kot paraadhee tari-aa ray — millions who had gone wrong have already crossed over. Think of a hard climb at camp. When you see a hundred kids who were scared too make it to the top, you think, "Maybe I can do this."

Gur naanak jin suni-aa paykhi-aa — those who have heard and seen Guru Nanak. The verse says they do not go back into garbhaas, the womb, meaning being born again and again. They no longer slip back into forgetting the One and feeling apart.

The note here is belonging. The door is open for everyone.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel like you're not good enough at something, who reminds you that you can still do it?
