Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I give myself completely to the Truest of the true.
It has no shape, no color, no outline you could sketch — yet it shows itself through the true deep song, like a signature.
It has no mother, no father, no children, no relatives, no partner, no longing for one. It has no family line at all — spotless, endless, beyond every beyond — and its one light shines in everyone.
Guru Nanak says the One has no family of Its own, and that is why Its light shines in everyone.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Saachay sachiaar vitahu kurbaan: I give myself completely to the Truest of the true.
Naa tis roop varan nahee raykh-i-aa: the One has no shape, no color, no outline. So how do we know It? Saachai sabad neesaan: the true shabad, the Guru's Word, is Its neesaan, Its signature. Like a signature at the bottom of a letter, it shows who wrote it, even if you never see the writer.
Naa tis maat pitaa sut bandhap: the One has no mother, father, children, or relatives, and no husband or wife. Akul: no family line at all. Niranjan: spotless.
Then the loving turn. Saglee jot tumaaree: Your one light is in everyone. Having no family of Its own, the One is family to all. And since no one can claim to be the One's special relative, no family line is better than another.
Who feels like family to you even though you're not related by blood?
