Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 5
Verse 5 of 5

A Clean Heart Lets the Drop Rejoin the Ocean

ਸੂਚੈ ਭਾਡੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੂਚਾਚਾਰੀ ॥
soochai bhaadai saach samaavai virlay soochaachaaree.
In the pure vessel, the True Name is contained; how few are those who practice true conduct.
ਤੰਤੈ ਕਉ ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥੬॥
tantai ka-o param tant milaa-i-aa naanak saran tumaaree. ||5||6||
The individual soul is united with the Supreme Soul; Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary, Lord. ||5||6||

In plain words

In a clean and open heart, the True Name settles in — though only a few really live that clean and honest way.

And then the small drop is joined to the great ocean it came from. Nanak rests in Your shelter.

A clean, open heart is where the small drop finally rejoins the great ocean it came from.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak ends with a beautiful picture: a clean heart, where the small drop joins the great ocean again.

Soochai bhaadai saach samaavai: in a clean vessel, the True Name settles in. The vessel is the heart, made honest and open. Virlay soochaachaaree: only a few truly live that clean, honest way.

Tantai ka-o param tant milaa-i-aa: word for word, the small thread is joined to the Supreme thread. It is like a raindrop falling back into the ocean it came from. It isn't lost. It becomes part of something huge.

Think of pouring a cup of water into a clear lake. You can't find the cup's water anymore, because it is now the whole lake.

The shabad began with a long list of what the One is beyond. It ends with something very simple: a clean heart, and the drop going home. And the last word is saran, shelter. Naanak saran tumaaree: Nanak rests in Your shelter.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your heart feel clear and open — and when did you last feel part of something much bigger?
