Where the Name Settles, Fear Loses Its Foothold

ਈਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੇ ॥
eehaa sukh aagai mukh oojal mit ga-ay aavan jaanay.
He finds peace in this world, and his face is radiant in the world hereafter; his comings and goings are finished.
nirbha-o bha-ay hirdai naam vasi-aa apunay satgur kai man bhaanay. ||3||
He becomes fearless, and his heart is filled with the Naam, the Name of the Lord; his mind is pleasing to the True Guru. ||3||

In plain words

Peace here and now, and a bright, clear face in whatever comes next — the endless coming and going settles into rest.

A person becomes unafraid, the Name lives inside them, and their whole heart delights the One who guides them.

Where the Name settles in, fear loses its foothold.
The deeper layer

This one says that where the Name settles, fear loses its hold. Nirbha-o bha-ay hirdai naam vasi-aa — they become fearless, and the Name comes to live in the heart. The Name, or Naam, means the One kept close in the heart. Fearlessness and the Name arrive together. They are two sides of one thing.

Think of a small child walking through a dark room while holding a parent's hand. The room is the same, but the fear is gone. When the Name settles in, the restless aavan jaan quiets down. Aavan jaan means coming and going. It is the busy spinning of a mind that keeps grabbing for more.

The word nirbha-o, without fear, also comes in the Mool Mantar, the opening lines of the Guru Granth Sahib. There it describes the One. A heart that rests in the One borrows that same steadiness.

A Question to Sit With
