God is the Doer, the Cause of causes, the Great Giver; God is the Supreme Lord and Master.

The Merciful Lord created all beings; God is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. ||1||

In plain words

The One is the Doer behind all doing, the great Giver, the Master of everything.

With kindness the One made every living being, and knows each of us from the inside out.

The One who runs everything also knows you personally.
The deeper layer

The One who runs everything also knows you from the inside.

Karan karaavanhaar — the One is the Doer, and the Cause behind every cause. Nothing happens all on its own. Think of a school play. The actors are on stage, but someone behind the curtain set up every light and every scene.

The One is also antarjaamee, the Inner-knower. That means the One who knows what is in each heart, even the things you have not said out loud.

So the verse holds two comforts at once. The One is big enough to run all that exists, and close enough to know you personally. And da-i-aalaa, all of that greatness is kind. The One made every living being with care.

A Question to Sit With

Does it feel bigger or smaller to you that something huge could still know you by heart?
