Only a Thin Wall Stands Between Us

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਭੀਤਿ ਭਇਓ ਹੈ ਬੀਚੋ ਸੁਨਤ ਦੇਸਿ ਨਿਕਟਾਇਓ ॥
ha-o ha-o bheet bha-i-o hai beecho sunat days niktaa-i-o.
The wall of egotism and pride separates us, but I can hear Him nearby.

There is a veil between us, like the wings of a butterfly; without being able to see Him, He seems so far away. ||3||

In plain words

Only the thin wall of my own 'me and mine' stands between us -- and even so, I can hear Him close by.

It is as fine as a butterfly's wing, yet because I cannot quite see Him, He seems far.

What separates you from what you love may be far thinner than it feels.
The deeper layer

Ha-o ha-o bheet -- the wall is haumai, the feeling of being a separate self. Bhaambheeree kay paat -- a veil thin as a butterfly's wing. The One is not truly distant; only a paper-thin sense of separateness makes it feel that way.

A Question to Sit With

What is a thin wall -- a small bit of pride or fear -- that keeps you from someone you love?
