You Don't Seize What You Love; You Grow Fragrant

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਉ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
hukam pachhaanai naankaa bha-o chandan laavai.
She who understands the Hukam of His Command, O Nanak, applies the Fear of God as her sandalwood oil;
ਗੁਣ ਕਾਮਣ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰੈ ਤਉ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
gun kaaman kaaman karai ta-o pi-aaray ka-o paavai. ||6||
she charms her Beloved with her virtue, and so obtains Him. ||6||

In plain words

Nanak says: she who understands the One's Will wears awe of the One like sandalwood oil.

She wins her Beloved's heart with her goodness, and so reaches Him.

You don't seize what you love — you become fragrant with awe and goodness, the kind of soul it naturally delights in.
The deeper layer

The friends give their answer.

Hukam pachhaanai — understand the Hukam, the One's Will, the way everything is meant to flow. Bha-o chandan laavai — wear awe of the One like sandalwood oil, a sweet perfume. And be good, because goodness is what wins the Beloved's heart.

The way to the Beloved isn't tricks or grabbing. It is becoming fragrant. You live in awe and goodness, and you are drawn close naturally. Think of a flower. It doesn't chase the bees. It just blooms and smells sweet, and the bees come.

You don't seize the Beloved. You become the kind of soul the Beloved delights in.

A Question to Sit With

What 'fragrance' — what quality lived out — would make you the kind of person the good is drawn to?
