Sikhism·Raag Tilang·Shabad 13
Verse 7 of 10

Longing and Talking Aren't the Same as Meeting

ਜੋ ਦਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਰੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
jo dil mili-aa so mil rahi-aa mili-aa kahee-ai ray so-ee.
She who meets her Beloved in her heart, remains united with Him; this is truly called union.
ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰਾ ਲੋਚੀਐ ਬਾਤੀ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥
jay bahutayraa lochee-ai baatee mayl na ho-ee. ||7||
As much as she may long for Him, she shall not meet Him through mere words. ||7||

In plain words

The one who meets her Beloved within her own heart stays united with Him — that is what real union means.

However much she longs for Him, she will not meet Him through words alone.

Longing for something and talking about it aren't the same as actually meeting it — real union is an inner reality, not words.
The deeper layer

This one makes a key point: wanting and talking are not the same as meeting.

Jo dil mili-aa so mil rahi-aa — the one who meets the Beloved in the heart stays together with Him. That is real union, and it happens inside. Baatee mayl na ho-ee — you don't meet by words alone, however much you long.

Think of a friend who lives far away. You can text all day and say how much you miss them. But nothing is like actually being together.

You can want the One very much and talk about it all day. The shabad points past the words and the wanting to the real thing: the Beloved found within.

A Question to Sit With

Where might you be substituting talk or longing for the real inner meeting? What would the meeting itself be like?
