As Metal Melts Into Metal, So Love Into Love

ਧਾਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਤੁ ਕਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਿਵੈ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
Dhaat milai fun Dhaat ka-o liv livai ka-o Dhaavai.
As metal melts into metal again, so does love melt into love.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਤਉ ਅਨਭਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥
gur parsaadee jaanee-ai ta-o anbha-o paavai. ||8||
By Guru's Grace, this understanding is obtained, and then, one obtains the Fearless Lord. ||8||

In plain words

As metal melts and merges into metal, so does love melt into love.

By grace this understanding comes, and then one reaches the Fearless One.

Union is like two pieces of the same metal melted together — love melts into love until there's no seam left between them.
The deeper layer

Here is the shabad's great picture of union.

Dhaat milai fun Dhaat ka-o — metal melts into metal. Liv livai ka-o Dhaavai — love runs into love. Melt two pieces of the same gold together. Afterward you can't tell where one ended and the other began. It is just one piece of gold.

So it is with love. The soul's love melts into the One's love until there is no seam. Union isn't two things glued side by side. It is two becoming one.

This comes by grace. Gur parsaadee jaanee-ai — by the Guru's grace, this understanding comes. Then one reaches anbha-o, the Fearless One.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever loved something so fully that the line between you and it seemed to dissolve?
