Sikhism·Raag Tilang·Shabad 9
Verse 4 of 4

Good Company Is How the Whole World Is Carried Across

ਜਿਨਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥
jin japi-aa tis ka-o balihaar.
I am a sacrifice to those who meditate on the Lord.
ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
tis kai sang tarai sansaar.
Associating with them, the whole world is saved.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲੋਚਾ ਪੂਰਿ ॥
kaho naanak parabh lochaa poor.
Says Nanak, God fulfills our hopes and aspirations.
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਛਉ ਧੂਰਿ ॥੪॥੨॥
sant janaa kee baachha-o Dhoor. ||4||2||
I long for the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||4||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I give myself to those who hold the One in mind.

Keep their company, and the whole world is carried across. Nanak says: the One fulfills our hopes and longings; I ache for the dust of the feet of the good.

Good company doesn't just help one person — it's how the whole world is carried across, one heart catching it from another.
The deeper layer

The close turns from the vision to the community that lives it. Arjan reveres those who remember — "a sacrifice to those who meditate" — because "associating with them, the whole world is saved." Good company is not just personally helpful; it is how the world itself is carried across, one person catching it from another. And Arjan takes the lowest place: "I long for the dust of the feet of the Saints." The grand non-dual vision resolves, as ever, into humble fellowship.

A Question to Sit With

Whose remembering has 'rubbed off' on you? Whose company carries you toward what's good?
