Look at the gift I was given: the five troublemakers inside me — wanting, anger, greed, clinging, pride — and even the sickness of ego were simply cleared out.
My chains were broken, I was set free from what corrupts, and the teacher's word was set in my heart. And here's the wonder — the One didn't weigh whether I was beautiful or ugly, good-looking or not. I was just held, with love, until I was soaked in it.
This one says you aren't loved for measuring up. You are simply held.
Panch dokh ar ahan rog — the five faults and the sickness of ego. The five are lust, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. The rahaa-o, the "pause" line and center of the shabad, says the One cleared all of them out.
The line to sit with is this one. Roop anroop moro kachh na beechaari-o — the One didn't weigh whether I was beautiful or plain. Paraym gahi-o — instead, I was held with love. Har rang bheen — soaked in the One's color, the One's love.
This is love with no conditions, said as plainly as it can be. You aren't loved because you scored high on some test of being good, pretty, or impressive. You are simply held. Think of a baby in a parent's arms. The baby hasn't done anything to earn it. Many of us quietly fear we must earn love. This verse sets that fear down.
And notice how the five faults went away. Not by hard willpower. They melted inside that love. Being fully accepted is itself what heals.
Do you ever feel you have to earn love by being good enough or impressive enough? What would it feel like to be loved just as you are?
