The Separation Was Never Real, Only a Curtain

I behold my Beloved, now that the curtain has been torn away. My mind is happy, pleased and satisfied.

My house is His; He is my God. Nanak is obedient to His Lord and Master. ||2||1||20||

In plain words

The curtain between us tore away and there was the One I love, right here — and my whole mind went quiet and glad.

This home is the One's home; the One is my everything. And Nanak is simply glad to belong.

The separation was never real — only a curtain — and behind it the One was here all along.
The deeper layer

This one says the distance from the One was never real. It was only a curtain.

Paykhi-o laalan paat beech kho-ay — I see my Beloved, now that the curtain in between is torn away. Paat means a curtain or veil. When it drops, what you find isn't far away. It was right here all along.

This is a core idea of the tradition. The separation only seemed real. The One was never hiding. We just couldn't see. Think of a friend waiting behind a door on your birthday. The whole time you felt alone, they were right there.

What follows is deep peace. Anad chitaa harkhay pateen — my mind is joyful, glad, and satisfied. Naanak so thaakur tis hee ko Dheen — Nanak belongs to his Master. This isn't fearful giving in. It's the restful feeling of finally being home.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to discover that something you were searching for was right beside you the whole time?
