In plain words

Dear One, come to me — You're the very breath in my body. Don't let me forget You for even a heartbeat; give this small devotee the gift of being made whole.

Clear away my doubt and keep me safe, You who know the inside of every heart. The treasure of Your Name is worth more to me than a thousand kingdoms — so please, turn Your kind glance my way.

The thing to fear isn't punishment — it's forgetting; and the thing to ask for is simply a loving glance.
The deeper layer

This one is a prayer. The thing it fears isn't punishment. It's forgetting.

Parabh jee mil mayray paraan — Dear God, meet me; You are my paraan, my breath of life. The One is the life inside the life.

The fear underneath is gentle and human. Bisar nahee nimakh hee-aray tay — don't let me forget You from my heart, even for a nimakh, the blink of an eye. The person isn't afraid of being punished. They're afraid of losing the thread of connection. It's like being scared of losing touch with your best friend after moving away. This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line — the center of the shabad.

The scale of value is clear. Kot raaj naam Dhan mayrai — the treasure of the Name is worth millions of kingdoms to me.

The prayer ends with a request: amrit darisat — a sweet, kind glance. This is the tradition's favorite picture of grace. It isn't something you earn. It's a loving look that falls on you and changes everything.

A Question to Sit With

Why might 'don't let me forget what matters' be one of the most honest prayers a person can make?
