Real Devotion Fills You Like Good Music

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਰਸਨਾ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ਜਸੁ ਪੂਰਿ ਅਘਾਵਹਿ ਸਮਰਥ ਕਾਨ ॥
aath pahar rasnaa gun gaavai jas poor aghaaveh samrath kaan.
Twenty-four hours a day, I sing Your Glorious Praises. They totally satisfy my ears, O my all-powerful Lord.

I seek Your Sanctuary, O Lord, O Giver of life to the soul; forever and ever, Nanak is a sacrifice to You. ||2||3||22||

In plain words

All day and all night I sing about You, and it fills my ears completely, You who can do anything.

I've come to Your shelter, giver of life to my soul — and Nanak is, over and over, glad to give himself to You.

Real devotion doesn't drain you — it fills you, the way good music leaves you fuller than before.
The deeper layer

This one finishes the prayer. Real devotion doesn't drain you. It fills you up.

Aath pahar rasnaa gun gaavai — all eight watches of the day, my tongue sings Your praises. That means day and night. Jas poor aghaaveh samrath kaan — the praise fills my ears until they are fully satisfied.

There's a lovely honesty about the senses here. The singing isn't a chore that wears you out. It feeds you. Think of a favorite song at full volume in the car. You come out of it lighter, not tired.

Sadaa sadaa naanak kurbaan — forever and ever, Nanak gives himself to You. Kurbaan means giving yourself away with gladness. It isn't grim or about disappearing. It is the natural overflow of someone who feels so held that giving himself back seems like the only fitting answer.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you could do all day and feel *more* full, not less? What makes it different from a chore?
