Phalgun — Enraptured, the Homecoming

ਫਲਗੁਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਰਹਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਸੁਭਾਇਆ ॥

In Phalgun, her mind is enraptured, pleased by the Love of her Beloved.

Night and day, she is enraptured, and her selfishness is gone.

Emotional attachment is eradicated from her mind, when it pleases Him; in His Mercy, He comes to my home.

O Nanak, the Guru has united me with Him. The soul-bride has found her Husband Lord, within the home of her own heart. ||16||

In plain words

In Phalgun, my heart overflows with delight, happy in the Beloved's love.

Day and night the joy keeps rising, and my small, me-first self is gone.

When it pleases the One, my clinging lets go, and in kindness the Beloved comes to my home.

I dress in all kinds of clothes, but without my Beloved I will find no place in the Beloved's palace.

I have decked myself with flower garlands, pearl necklaces, sweet oils and silk robes.

Nanak says: the Guru has brought me to the Beloved. My heart has found its Beloved inside the home of my own heart.

When the small self steps aside, the Beloved is found in the home of your own heart.
The deeper layer

Phalgun (February-March) closes the year as spring and color return (Holi falls in this month), and the year of longing ends in union. Aap gavaa-i-aa (the self let go) is haumai dissolving: the me-first self slipping away. The outer finery — garlands, pearls, silk, scented oil — is set beside the only adornment that matters: the Beloved's own love (pir loree seegaaree). The Guru arranges the union within the home of the heart (ghar var paa-i-aa), completing the movement begun in Chet.

A Question to Sit With

What happens to a worry or a want when you stop putting yourself first for a moment?
