The night is so dark; what will become of your honor? The thieves will break into your home and rob you.

O Saviour Lord, Inaccessible and Infinite, please hear my prayer.

O Nanak, the fool never remembers Him; what can he see in the dark of night? ||1||

In plain words

Life is like a single night, and this is its first watch — the very beginning.

Inside me is a treasure worth guarding: the awareness of the One I love. I do not want to sleep through it and let it slip away.

So I keep a light burning. In the dark, small worries can sneak in like thieves and carry off my peace — but a heart that stays awake and remembers is safe.

Great One, hidden and endless, please hear me: keep me awake, and keep me remembering.

A heart that stays awake and remembers is never robbed in the dark.
The deeper layer

The night has four pahar (watches); here they picture one human life from dusk toward dawn. The “riches” (vakhar) are the inner treasure of remembering the One; the “thieves” are the small fears and cravings that slip in when awareness sleeps. The closing prayer to the “Saviour, inaccessible and infinite” turns the whole warning gently toward trust.

A Question to Sit With

What is one precious thing inside you that you want to keep awake and remember every day?
