Verse 4 of 4

The True Home, Found by Searching

sach ghar khoj lahay saachaa gur thaano.
By searching, the true home, the place of the True Guru is found.
manmukh nah paa-ee-ai gurmukh gi-aano.
The Gurmukh obtains spiritual wisdom, while the self-willed manmukh does not.
dayvai sach daano so parvaano sad daataa vad daanaa.
Whoever the Lord has blessed with the gift of Truth is accepted; the Supremely Wise Lord is forever the Great Giver.
amar ajonee asthir jaapai saachaa mahal chiraanaa.
He is known to be Immortal, Unborn and Permanent; the True Mansion of His Presence is everlasting.
dot uchaapat laykh na likee-ai pargatee jot muraaree.
The day-to-day account of deeds is not recorded for that person, who manifests the radiance of the Divine Light of the Lord.
naanak saachaa saachai raachaa gurmukh taree-ai taaree. ||4||5||
O Nanak, the true person is absorbed in the True Lord; the Gurmukh crosses over to the other side. ||4||5||

In plain words

Search, and you find your true home — the place where the teaching lives.

A heart turned toward the teaching gains this understanding; a heart turned only on itself keeps missing it. And even this understanding is a gift, freely given by the endlessly generous One.

That One is deathless, unborn, unchanging — a home that lasts forever.

For a heart that shines with that Light, the old tally of rights and wrongs is simply wiped clean. What is real is folded into the Real, and the awake heart crosses safely over.

Search, and you find a home that lasts forever — and the old tally is wiped clean.
The deeper layer

The true home is found by searching, yet the finding is a gift freely given. The One is deathless, unborn, unchanging. “The account not recorded” becomes the old tally wiped clean for the heart that shines with the Light.

A Question to Sit With

If your old mistakes could be wiped clean, how would you want to start fresh?
