Verse 5 of 5

Of All You Lean On, the One Never Gives Way

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੀ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
naanak aykee baahraa doojaa naahee ko-ay.
O Nanak, without the One Lord, there is no other at all.
ਤੈ ਸਹ ਲਗੀ ਜੇ ਰਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਹੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੨॥
tai sah lagee jay rahai bhee saho raavai so-ay. ||4||2||
If the soul-bride remains attached to You, then she shall enjoy her Husband Lord. ||4||2||

In plain words

In the end there is only the One — nothing else to finally lean your whole weight on.

Stay close and connected, and you'll know the joy of belonging to that love.

Of everything you could lean on, the One never gives way — and staying close to it is where the joy is.
The deeper layer

Of everything you could lean on, the One is the one that never gives way.

Naanak aykee baahraa doojaa naahee ko-ay: without the One, says Nanak, there is no other at all. Everything else comes and goes. The One is the ground to stand on.

Think of leaning on a wall versus leaning on a curtain. The curtain moves the moment you put weight on it. The wall holds.

The shabad ends by coming back to the soul-bride. Tai sah lagee jay rahai: if she stays close to You, her Beloved, she will know the joy of being near. Staying connected in love is the whole of it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something steady you can lean on that won't let you down?
