Sikhism·Raag Wadahans·Shabad 12
Verse 3 of 5

Feeling Undeserving Isn't the Final Word

ਮੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਸਰੀਰੇ ॥
mai avgan bharpoor sareeray.
My body is over-flowing with corruption;
ਹਉ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲਾ ਅਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪੂਰੇ ॥੨॥
ha-o ki-o kar milaa apnay pareetam pooray. ||2||
how can I meet my Perfect Beloved? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes I feel so full of my own mess and mistakes.

How could I ever be close to my perfect Beloved?

Sometimes we feel too full of our own mess to deserve something good — but that feeling isn't the final word.
The deeper layer

Sometimes we feel we are not good enough. That feeling is real, but it is not the final word.

Mai avgan bharpoor sareeray: I feel full to the brim with my faults. Ha-o ki-o kar milaa: so how can I meet my perfect Beloved?

This is an honest verse. It is not about hating yourself. It is the very human feeling of "How could someone so good want me?" Children know it too. Think of the first day on a new team, when everyone else seems better than you.

The verse simply names that ache. The rest of the shabad answers it. Closeness is a gift of grace, not a prize you earn.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt 'not good enough' for something wonderful? What helped?
